Friederike Hammann, an artist based in Neukölln, Berlin since 1992, creates works that reflect social issues and catastrophic events such as forest fires and floods using a variety of techniques and materials. The onset of Russia’s war of aggression on Ukraine brought her work to a standstill. Days later, she set herself strict guidelines for format and technique, gathered blue and black ballpoint pens, and began to draw on small, square-format paper. Hammann expresses anger, fear, and helplessness through energetic straight lines and arcs, sometimes overlapping, and at other times resembling explosions. She specifically chose sturdy paper for its resilience to the intense pressure of her forceful mark-making. Using an unconscious process, she runs pens over the paper until they are almost completely covered by the dark, solid lines of her drawing. A maximum of one work per day is produced in response to specific war events, media reports, or conversations, sometimes with a time lag, and interspersed with several days of mental processing. The end result is Dark Diary, a continuous series of abstract, sombre drawings set out to be read like a diary - from right to left, top to bottom - chronicling the ongoing conflict.

„Empörung über den russischen Überfall, Zorn und Furcht ließen meine Arbeit 2022 still stehen. Nach vielen Tagen der Lähmung begann ich zu zeichnen und fand einen Ausdruck und ein Ventil. Meine strenge Vorgabe des Formats und der Technik führte mich zurück in eine mediative Konzentration und Sammlung. Das Bündel der Kugelschreiber treibt feste und strenge Wege in das harte Papier, das dem standhalten muss: Kraft, Druck und Disziplin geben das Feld, das mich hält.
Es gibt keine tägliche Zeichnung, sondern ich folge dem Impuls aus Anlass und Bedürfnis. Das Klima der Furcht bleibt zwar gegenwärtig, ist durch den Rhythmus der Striche aber gebändigt.“
