Graffiti Stories Press Release

The history of writing is one of complex metamorphosis. It began thousands of years ago as a way of keeping records - it developed into a way of thinking, of conceiving ideas, of creating and of being. Writing lies at the root of our civilization. From the initial pictogram, that was the key element in all writing systems, to hieroglyphics that recorded spoken language through phonograms and signs, to sophisticated Asian calligraphy. In Western civilization, writing in the 17th century developed into printing. A new alphabet was designed in France where each letter was formed inside a square that was composed on a grid divided into 64 smaller squares. The first typography which evolved into newspaper print and modern technology.

Graffiti is part of the story of writing - writing that stands on the border between art and technology in all its variety. Graffiti is about the 'self' and the 'other', about identity, ritual, about creation and destruction, about the signs people struggle to leave in history. Graffiti is part of the mysterious course of writing, part of the accumulated memory of humankind. (George Jean)

Brian Getnick, Yvette Kaiser Smith and Carrie Notari, three artists based in Chicago, USA, relate to Graffiti in their artwork represented in this exhibition which comes directly from Rome, Italy. In addition Carrie Notari exhibits four images of her Aphrodite Series.

Graffiti Stories Press Release - German

(George Jean)
